The natural ageing process causes the skin to lose its elasticity and the connective tissue and muscles to slacken. The face and neck lose their contour and quite pronounced wrinkles and lines form. Facelifting gives the face a harmonious contour, the skin looks fresh and smooth; the signs of ageing are significantly reduced. The natural facial expression and individual features are retained, thereby eliminating the possibility of a mask-like appearance. One or even several facial regions, such as the forehead, temples, cheeks and neck, can be tightened simultaneously.
The operation is performed in an inpatient setting, under a general anaesthetic.
The operation involves carefully tightening the skin and the underlying connective tissue separately, and removing excess skin. The barely visible scars are on the hairline and around the ear. At the end of the operation we have to insert a drainage tube which can be removed after a few days.
After the operation a light pressure bandage is usually placed around the head for 1 to 2 days. The sutures can be removed after 7 to 10 days.
Swelling, reduced sensation and a feeling of tension in the facial region occur frequently, but subside after 2 to 3 weeks, provided the areas affected are kept cool and the head is propped up. Discolouration due to bruising occurs occasionally, but also disappears within 2 to 3 weeks. Make-up can be worn again after 7 days.
